Your Partner in Functional Capacity Evaluations

At Albany Physiotherapy Clinic, our Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are systematic processes designed to assess your physical and functional abilities, particularly relating to tasks you may perform in the workplace or daily life. Conducted by our trained physiotherapists, components can range from simple tasks such as gripping or lifting to more complex activities such as carrying heavy objects.

Components of an FCE
Assessment components can include but are not limited to:

  • Muscle strength
  • Endurance tests
  • Lifting capability
  • Range of motion
  • Cardiovascular capacity
  • Hand strength and dexterity
  • Postural tolerance
  • Functional tasks (pushing, pulling, carrying)
  • Speed and flexibility

Objectives of Functional Capacity Evaluations
The main objectives of an FCE are diverse. However, it all comes down to the primary goal of understanding an individual’s physical strengths and limitations. These evaluations allow us, as certified professionals, to provide the following:

Pre-Employment Assessments/Return to Work Decisions
One of the primary applications of an FCE is to determine if an individual is medically suitable for a particular job role. Assessments are scheduled by a third party who acts on behalf of an employer. We currently have agreements with Sonic HealthPlus and Workforce Health Assessors; however, assessments can be provided privately upon request.

FCEs are also used to determine if an individual is ready to return to work after an injury or significant medical event. During this assessment, we can determine if specific accommodations or modifications are needed to aid the return process.

Legal Insights
When it comes to personal injury or similar legal cases, the results of an FCE can provide quantifiable data about someone wanting to claim compensation. This aids both legal professionals and authorities to understand the physical ramifications of an incident or injury.
