The Healing Power of TENS

TENS, also known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, is used for recent (acute) and long-lasting (chronic) pain in all ages. The electrical current stimulates nerve cells that block the transmission of pain signals, which changes the way you perceive pain.

What Does a TENS Machine Look Like?

A TENS Machine is a small, battery-operated, portable device. It comes with different modes and pre-set programs. It will also come with varying numbers of leads and electrodes. Wireless Tens Machines are easy to carry and are used for both pre and post workouts extensively.

What Does It Feel Like?

Electrodes are placed on the skin in positions directed by your physiotherapist, and dependant on your condition and pain levels. The feel will depend on the pulse mode, which elicits ‘electric’ bursts of a vibrating sensation that aids in easing pain. However, if you are wanting to achieve muscle stimulation then a visible muscle contraction is felt.

Understanding The Right Use of TENS:

TENS has both low and high frequency modes. These modes are used to target pain at a low frequency or ultra-high frequency depending on your condition and level of pain. Low frequency TENS generally targets sensory nerves and does not produce visible muscle contraction. This is commonly used to reduce pain, tenderness and to activate weak muscles.

TENS Machines are a non-pharmacological option for pain relief, and work to enhance muscle stimulation. The machine comes with different settings to achieve varying goals. Your physiotherapist or healthcare provider will discuss with you the most appropriate settings to use in order to achieve optimum results.

Tips To Get More Benefits

This easy to use, affordable and effective modality can be utilised widely by most people, but should always be recommended by a healthcare professional to ensure it is appropriate and safe to use.

Using the correctly prescribed parameters (frequency, intensity, and duration) will help to achieve improved benefits.
